EXETER MEDIEVAL UNDERGROUND TUNNELS

Surveying the Exeter Underground Tunnels was an incredibly exciting project for our team. To explore and document such rich local history, right on our doorstep, was a true privilege. It remains one of the most fascinating jobs we've undertaken—combining the challenge of 3D laser scanning with the unique atmosphere of a medieval tunnel network beneath the city.

THE HISTORY

14th Centuary

he tunnels were first constructed in the 1300s to house lead pipes that brought clean drinking water into the city from natural springs outside the walls.

425m Long

The known length of the tunnels stretches approximately 425 meters (1,394 feet) beneath Exeter’s city centre.

7 Access Points

Historically, there were at least 7 access points into the tunnels, many of which were sealed off during later development or for safety.

30m Deep

In some areas, the tunnels run as deep as 30 meters (98 feet) below street level, although most parts are closer to the surface.
